  • Max King is playing one of the best games of his career. He has a game-high five goals and six contested marks to keep the Saints in the contest.

Two of his goals have come in this final quarter and the margin is a manageable 19 points, 9.6.60 to 12.7.79.

Five goals is also King’s equal best haul of his short career.

The Saints hung in there for a while in the third quarter, but in the end only outscored the Eagles by three points to trim the deficit to 25 points at the final change.

A goal after the siren from Darling served as a hammer blow for the Saints, especially as Long inexplicably hit the post from a metre out a few minutes earlier.

West Coast seemed to lose momentum when their most influential player Kelly left the ground for a considerable amount of time for medical attention. But they’ve managed to reassert themselves.

The Eagles now lead the disposals 270-246, marks 100-65, clearances 29-22, contested possessions 98-91, free kicks 13-11, hitouts 28-26, inside 50s 41-38 and scoring shots 18-13.

It’s been a fairly uneventful third quarter, with just a goal apiece as the Eagles continue to enjoy a 26-point lead halfway through the third quarter, 9.6.60 to 5.4.34.

An incredible transformation with the Lions kicking 13 goals to one after half-time, turning a 29-point deficit into a 49-point victory - a 13-goal turnaround if you don’t mind.

In the end the Lions dominated the Suns in contested possessions 148-116, clearances 39-27, hitouts 47-20, inside 50s 72-40 and scoring shots 35-21 while they also won the disposals 373-364, marks 108-105 and free kicks 21-20.

A dominant second quarter from the Eagles has seen them take complete control of this contest.

Their physicality and pressure have proven too much for the Saints to handle, with Kelly, in particular, leading the way with a superb display in the midfield.

Kelly now has a game-high 19 disposals, 495 metres gained, seven inside 50s, seven score involvements to go with a team-high four clearances, four marks, seven contested possessions, two goal assists and a goal.

West Coast are leading the disposals 176-173, marks 59-47, clearances 19-18, hitouts 23-20 and contested possessions 69-64.

And while the inside 50s are level 27-27, West Coast have been far more efficient up forward with eight more scoring shots 14-6 and double the Saints’ goals 8-4.

Kennedy and Darling already have five goals between them.

What a transformation up at the Gabba. The Lions have kicked 10 goals to zero since half-time, including five in this final quarter, to turn a 29-point deficit into a 37-point lead.

Incredible stuff from the flag fancies as they try and stay in touch with the top four.

McCarthy (4), Daniher (3) and Cameron (3) have kicked 10 goals between them and have caused many headaches for Stuart Dew’s team in the Suns’ backline.

The Eagles have kicked four of the second quarter’s six goals, including a pair to Darling, to grab a game-high 14-point lead with 7:23 left before half-time, 6.3.39 to 4.1.25.

Kennedy also has two majors for the Eagles while King is St Kilda’s leading goalkicker with two as well.
