EDITORIAL Biden shamefully betrayed his allies

In his brief time in office, U.S. President Joe Biden has shown himself to be disgracefully disloyal to his allies.

The chaotic withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan will be his hideous legacy. The images of frantic Afghans desperately clinging to a departing U.S. military airplane are etched in the consciences of decent people around the world.

Yes, Biden came late to the Afghanistan issue. The initial deal with the Taliban was forged by his predecessor, Donald Trump, and Afghanistan has been the graveyard of democracies for centuries.

But it was the precipitousness with which Biden pulled out U.S. support for the Afghan army that has caused a humanitarian disaster. It left allies like Canada scrambling to get our diplomats and support staff, including our heroic Afghan interpreters, out of harm’s way.

The Afghan mission was an American-led response to terrorist attacks on U.S. soil. Canada, the U.K., and other countries joined to show solidarity with the the U.S. in response to the attacks of September 11.

It wasn’t just Americans who died in Afghanistan. The families of Canadian and British soldiers who gave their lives in the hope of a better future for Afghan children have been betrayed.

This week, the U.K. Parliament was recalled to deliver an unprecedented all-party rebuke to Biden. He was denounced as “dishonourable,” and the withdrawal was condemned as “shameful” and “catastrophic.”

Biden’s ham-fisted actions betrayed the Afghan people â€" especially women and children now consigned to the Dark Ages of brutal Taliban rule.

If only Prime Minister Justin Trudeau weren’t MIE â€" Missing In Election â€" he, too, could have recalled Parliament to express this country’s dismay. Then again, he bears blame for this fiasco.

In the six years since Canada left Afghanistan, Trudeau could have brought our interpreters to safety. To his eternal shame, he did nothing.

Biden has sent a message that the U.S. can’t be trusted. He doesn’t have a world view and only cares about American interests.

Where does that leave NATO and the rest of the Western allies? The totalitarian world is watching. China and Russia are emboldened by Biden’s weakness.

First it was Afghanistan. Can Taiwan and Ukraine be far behind?
